Edwards has 'productive' visit
Brenham (Texas) wide receiver Derek Edwards was in Lubbock over the weekend on an official visit with Texas Tech. Edwards has been committed to the Red Raiders since March, so he took the opportunity to cultivate what he hopes are further additions to their 2011 class.
"Most of the time I was with Brandon Fulse. He's a real cool dude, real laid back. He really likes Tech and they're one of this top two with Auburn being the other," he said. "We talked about it a lot and I just kept telling him to "make the right decision for him." I'm sure he could be successful at Auburn, but we could own the Big 12 if he decides to make the move with us. I'm hoping he does."
"Since I've been down with Tech for a while I didn't really have to check out stuff for my benefit. It was cool, though. I got to hang out with some of the other guys who aren't committed yet and hopefully we gave them a good idea of why it's going to be a lot of fun to be a Red Raider. I think it will prove to be a productive weekend for us."
Edwards not only spent time with the future of Texas Tech, but he also spent some time with a few current Red Raiders. One, in particular, whom Edwards is hoping to model his game after when he arrives on the South Plains next month."
"Lyle Leong was my player-host and it was great. I couldn't ask for anybody better to hang out with," he said. "I got to hang out with Lyle, Ronnie Daniels, and Eric Stephens. We just chilled and talked about Texas Tech football. It was great to get their perspectives after being in the program for a few years."
"They were both there with the different coaching staffs and it's just awesome to hear the way they talk about what they've got going on with Coach Tuberville. They're excited about the future and so am I, obviously. That's what I wanted to be a Red Raider."
The 6-foot-1, 163-pounder completed his weekend by going through a film session with assistant coach Tommy Mainord.
"Right before I left I got to sit down for a little while and go through some film with Coach Mainord. It was cool because we kind of talked about different ways I might be used in the future. I think they're wanting me to come in and make a run at the X receiver position first. I can't wait to be in that film room breaking down my own tape."
With Edwards focused so much on the targets still on the board for Texas Tech, it wasn't unreasonable to assume that he had a feel for their reactions, post-visit.
"I think Brandon (Fulse) loved it. Every bit of it. He was having a good time the whole time. All of the uncommitted recruits were hyping it up like they loved it," he said. "We'll see if they were serious or not I guess."
"I know I loved it. Tech is where it's at, and that's where I'm going to be real soon. I'm excited to get there and compete for the chance to make an impact early on. It's good to be a Red Raider."
Edwards committed to Tech in March over offers from Arizona, Arkansas, Baylor, Houston, Louisville, Oklahoma State, SMU, TCU, Texas A&M, and Utah.
