Sources: Harsin to take Arkansas State job

Multiple sources told Orangebloods.com Tuesday night, Texas co-offensive coordinator Bryan Harsin has accepted an offer from Arkansas State to be the next head coach.

According to sources, Arkansas State reached out to Houston Nutt and also had its eye on Oklahoma State offensive coordinator Todd Monken. But Nutt declined, and Monken took the Southern Mississippi job.

The focus then turned to Harsin and Sam Houston State coach Willie Fritz. But Harsin apparently blew away Arkansas State athletic director Terry Mohajir in Tuesday's interview, and Harsin was offered the job.

Harsin, who makes $625,000 per year at Texas, is expected to earn roughly $850,000
as the head coach at Arkansas State. Harsin would take over for Gus Malzahn, who led the Red Wolves to a 9-3 record in the Sun Belt Conference before leaving to replace Gene Chizik at Auburn.

Malzahn replaced Hugh Freeze, who took over at Ole Miss this past season.

Sources close to the situation at Texas have said if Harsin moved on, Major Applewhite would take over the play-calling duties on offense for the Longhorns.
