Thursday's practice report
Chip Brown
Orangebloods.com ****Quandre Diggs was working mostly at safety on Thursday. It appears he's the frontrunner to take over Kenny Vaccaro's place at the team's nickelback and safety.
The progress of CBs Sheroid Evans and Duke Thomas opposite Carrington Byndom has Duane Akina feeling more comfortable about the possibilty of Diggs at nickel and safety.
****A lot of one-on-one work between the linemen today, and DTs Ashton Dorsey, Malcom Brown and Chris Whaley all flashed. Brown pretty much dominated the interior of the offensive line. Dorsey got the best of OG Mason Walters.
****With that being said, the offense probably had the better day Thursday. David Ash was sharp, connecting with Kendall Sanders for a couple TD passes in red zone offense scrimmage work.
****Mike Davis also had a TD catch in red zone work.
****The biggest news of the day involving the receivers was the hamstring injury suffered by Jaxon Shipley. The severity of the injury wasn't immediately known, but Shipley's expected to miss some time.
****Even though LB Jordan Hicks has been cleared for contact, one observer said Hicks didn't have any highlights.
****Everyone seems to agree RBs Johnathan Gray and Malcolm Brown are both having a solid spring - running and catching the football. Joe Bergeron "continues to show he can do anything the coaches ask of him at the running back position."
****Connor Brewer ran second-team QB Thursday, but that's because the other young QBs got all the work on Tuesday. Tyrone Swoopes has moved up to the No. 3 QB position behind David Ash and Case McCoy. One observer wondered if it might be time to move Jalen Overstreet to a new position because he's such a versatile athlete.
****There's no question the defense is being greatly affected by the tempo of the new offense under Major Applewhite and Darrell Wyatt.
"They are running, running, running, " one observer said. "The guys are running plays with just 11 seconds gone on the play clock. Then, they run to line up and snap it again."
****The offense had no interceptions on Thursday, and K Nick Jordan appeared to be 4-of-5 on field goals.
****Freshman Jake Raulerson's emergency appendectomy should remind Texas that it has no viable option at backup center at the moment.
