Ohio recruits visit MSU
This past weekend two of the top uncommitted players in the state of Ohio were in East Lansing checking out Michigan State University; wide receiver prospect JayJay Pinckney[db] of Sylvania Southview High School and linebacker/defensive end [db]Jamal Davis of Canton McKinley High School. SpartanMag.com has some details.
The 6-foot-3, 185-pound Pinckney is a player that the Spartans have been pursuing for several months. He was offered a scholarship by Michigan State earlier this year and he has been on campus multiple times. Rivals.com rates Pinckney a 3-star recruit and the #45 athlete in the nation for the class of 2014. In addition to Michigan State, Pinckney holds scholarships from Indiana, Kentucky, Boston College, Cincinnati, Louisville, Pittsburgh and Minnesota.
Pinckney told SpartanMag.com the following:
"Yes I was at Michigan State this weekend, it was a great time. I will be back up there in a few weeks when the play Michigan."
Pinckney stated that his visit for the Michigan game will again be an unofficial visit and that he will take his official visit to Michigan State sometime after that. It is very likely that the staff will have Pinckney join several of the committed recruits when they take their official visits.
As SpartanMag.com has reported in the past, Pinckney has an impressive combination of speed and explosiveness. This past spring he was one of the top long jumpers and 400-Meter runners in Ohio. So far this fall he has caught 8 touchdowns for Southview High School and is key reason why the team is 5-3 and still in the hunt for a playoff spot.
The 6-foot-3, 215-pound Davis was also in East Lansing watching the Spartan defense pitch a shutout versus the Purdue Boilermakers. Davis is rated a 3-star recruit by rivals.com and the #43 player in Ohio for the class of 2014. He currently holds scholarship offers from Louisville, Indiana, Minnesota and a host of MAC programs. The Spartans have yet to offer Davis, but are taking a serious look.
Davis is listed as a linebacker recruits by most recruiting services, but he could end up growing into a defensive end. At every camp or combine he attended this past spring and summer scouts commented on how he was physically the most impressive player at his position in attendance. From a height and weight standpoint Davis compares favorably to current Spartan Jamal Lyles at the same point in his recruitment.
Davis camped at Michigan State this summer and it was there that he put himself on the shortlist of potential offer players. Davis was very succinct when it came to his thoughts about his visit to Michigan State on Saturday.
"It was amazing!"
Like Pinckney, Davis is expected to be back on campus later this fall if his schedule permits. If an official visit to Michigan State is set up, it will likely be where a scholarship offer is made. If that happens, it may not take long for Davis to make a college decision.
Davis is having a strong senior for Canton McKinley High School this fall. He has helped the team to an 8-0 record with his play. An end of season showdown against rival Massillon Washington High School looming.
Canton McKinley is the same school that current Spartan defensive back Jermaine Edmondson graduated from back in 2012.
Additional Note: Spartanmag.com has learned that running back Gerald Owens of West Deptford High School plans to be in East Lansing the weekend of November 2nd for the Michigan game.
