McCoy started in the Longhorns 42-24 loss at Kansas State in place of sophomore quarterback David Ash, who was nursing a rib injury. Texas named senior punter Alex King the emergency backup quarterback for the Kansas State game to protect the redshirts of freshmen quarterbacks Connor Brewer and Jalen Overstreet.
King is expected to be the backup plan again for Saturday.
Hicks has not played in a game for the Longhorns since his hip injury against Ole Miss. In November, Mack Brown said Texas would seek a medical redshirt for Hicks at the end of the season.
