May 5, 2011After former assistant coach Tracy Webster came and went after just one season, Nebraska hopes it found a more permanent replacement.
Cox, who was an assistant under Sadler for one season at Arkansas-Fort Smith in 2002-03, joins the Huskers staff with more than 20 years of experience on his resume.
Prior to USF, Cox served as an assistant under Billy Gillispie at both Kentucky and Texas A&M and also replaced Sadler as head coach at Arkansas-Fort Smith from 2003-06. Prior to first joining Gillispie at Texas A&M in '06, Cox was the court coach for the USA Basketball Under-21 World Championships team in 2005.
He also coached eight NBA products in his career, including the likes of Patrick Patterson, Dominique Jones, Acie Law and Theo Ratliffe.
Along with being a successful coach on the court, Cox has built up a solid reputation as a recruiter, especially in the junior college ranks. Last season he was able to bring heralded juco recruits Jawanza Poland and Hugh Robertson to USF, and was also responsible for landing Andre Jackson and Blake Nash this year.
In Cox's two seasons at USF under head coach Stan Heath, the Bulls went a combined 30-36, including their first post-season berth since '02 when they qualified for the National Invitation Tournament in two years ago.
Sadler, who was attending the Big Ten Conference basketball coaches' meetings on Thursday, declined to comment until the hiring was made official by the university.
