You could do far better...

Mizuno has excellent quality and the best forgings in the business. But their playability is putrid.

So I have been putting it off for the last year or so, but since I am going to Bandon Dunes with a big group of buddies in a couple months and this thread inspired me to finally retire by Ben Hogan Apex Edge's and get something more current. So I spent all afternoon at Edwin Watts and this is what I ended up with:

Callaway Razr X Irons - second place were the Ping K15's and the Diablo Edge Irons were barely third, but all of which were really good. The Taylor Made 2.0 Irons were a distant fourth. Got a 4 thru PW and am having them custom fit at the factory with an extra .5 inch in length and 2 degree lift in lie. I am 6 ft 2 and they had me do all the stuff to fit me. Getting stiff shafts as my swing speed was in the 80's with the irons.

Taylor Made R11 Driver - just the regular, not the Tour as I was not sure of the difference. Second place was the Callaway Razr Hawk, which was also great. I just could not hit the Titleist 910 well. Kept popping it up. Would have been happy with the Callaway though, I just happen to hit the R11 a little better and I knew that TOH recommended it so that effected my decision. BTW, got home and moved the heavy weight to the back and light one to the front. Is that correct?

I also got the matching Taylor made R11 3 wood that I did not end up hitting in the store. I just bought it because I thought it made sense to buy a matching 3 wood to go with my driver. Was that a bad idea?

Got a set of wedges...the Vokey SW and LW (8 rolls). He gave me the ones that are not "regulation" and have a red mark on them (???). Not quite sure what all that is about, but they hit really good.

Got a Seamore putter that is a pretty simple blade design. Need to get this on the putting green to see if I like it as well under fire as in the store. Lastly, I got a Callaway lite weight carry bag because its my understanding that you walk at Bandon...so I am set.

The only thing I have left to track down are a new pair of golf shoes and some new golf balls, but I am well on my way.

What do you guys think of my purchases? Did I do well?

you did very well. Good job. I'm jealous.....again

Sounds like you hit a home run.

Just out of interest, why did you choose the regular Razr over the tour model?

I got the Razr X over the Tour or Forged because I am an 18 handicapper and I wanted the more forgiving clubs.

The Razr X have the highest MPF ratings so I'd say you went the right route.

You can really get schizophrenic shopping for new sticks.

I spent the last couple of days on the range with a swing I felt really comfortable with. I would have been very happy heading to the first tee with the way I was swinging. And so it gave me a good basis of comparison between my x-14 steelheads, the razr, the razr tour and the AP2 s, all steel shaft.

Truth is, when it came right down to it, the feel of my current clubs was as comfortable to me as the Razrx tour and the AP2's. I hit the x14's as well and just as long, with maybe hitting the tours a tad bit farther. But not enough to switch. The two newer designs MAY have had less dispersion on my off hits, but it wAsn't noticeable enough to make me regret not buying them.

The regular Razrx did have less dispersion on off hits. And I like the way they feel, though it is harder to feel when I hit all of it versus when I may end up a few yards short. Not sure that matters a whole lot since I already have hit the shot and it is on its way before I actually feel it anyway.

So my choice is down to two: buy a new set of RazrX's with the Aldila graphite shafts, or spend about a third of that costs reshafting my current clubs with a quality graphite shaft, and maybe look at buying the R11 with the balance.

I'm leaning towards the reshafting option. Start playing with graphite shafts, see how I like them, and if I still like the RazrX's next year I can buy them then, possibly even on sale.

One more question for ToH: assuming I refit my current irons, are the Aldila VS shafts the shaft of choice? Or would you steer me to another shaft? It would be a flex I would like somewhere in between a regular and a stiff.

Thanks again, you have been a tremendous resource!

While the VS is a good option, there are better graphite iron options out there.

The Aerotech Steelfiber 85/95 series is 1a and the Aldila NV Iron Pro 105 is 1b, in my opnion.

The XCalibur Iron Series and the Mitsubishi Rayon JavlnFX Iron series are also excellent options.

If you are looking for an "in between" flex, the NV Pro is your best choice. The Pro R flex would be a stiffer Regular option. However, a set of these shafts will run you about $370.

TOH, do you have a recommendation for a good golf ball for me? I just bought the Razr X's and TM R11. I am good on distance, but really need help around the greens, so I want something with really good feel.

When it comes to golf balls, even a 25 handicapper will benefit from playing a premium ball like the Pro V1, Bridgestone B330, Taylormade Penta, etc.

However, you can still get great performance out of other balls as well. The Maxfli Tour Series is a great product. They have 3 different levels based on your clubhead speed and they are generally a little less expensive than the other premium balls. They are also cast urethane (of which only Titleist and Srixon currently also do) which makes them have exceptional feel around the greens. Cast urethane produces the best feeling balls.

Obviously, anything made by Titleist will do you well as well. But if you are willing to branch out, maybe give the Bridgestone B330 and Srixon Z Star balls a try as well. Both are excellent products. There are multiple options in almost every premium ball to cater to your specific needs. I'm currently working on getting a ball fitting system into Dick's and Galaxy that will kick the sh*t out of anything out there right now. It's just cutting through the corporate red tape that can slow the process down.

Personally, I'm currently gaming the Penta, but I still have not hit the new formula Titleist.

What is the best Maltby head and shaft combo for a 12 handicap? I've never had lessons but enjoy playing. I certainly don't think I'm consistent enough or have time to master blades. Thanks for the input.

The KE4's are phenomenal because they are adjustable, that is, you can adjust the swingweight in them by adjusting the heel and toe weights. In my opinion, they are close to the perfect iron for the recreational player because of their ability to be customized.

Another good choice would be the Tricept TU, which chazutx (a poster on the board) purchased. They have a little less offset than most would expect from a super-ultra game improvement iron, but that is the beauty of the design. Incredibly solid and ultra forgiving.

Those would be the two heads I would check out. As for shafts, stick with either Project X, The True Temper GS series, KBS Tour 90 or True Temper Dynalite Gold SL.

I had a meeting with True Temper/Grafalloy yesterday and did some frequency testing on their shafts. Basically, unless you are a 3 handicap or below, I would stay away from the Dynamic Gold (unless it is the Dynamic Gold SL series). They are just too strong a shaft for most players. With that being said, if you are a high speed, high spin, high launch player, then there is no better option than the Dynamic Gold.

TOH,
Thank you for all of the info on the last nine pages. I have been reading with great interest. I am playing the Titlest AP 2 irons with stiff shaft and hitting them pretty good. Recently on a business trip I hit rental clubs at a resort property--the new Taylor Made Burner 2.0's in a stiff graphite shaft. I was killing them. I am interested in getting fitted for a new set. I asked my pro at the club last night and he says my swing speed is not conducive to graphite and I still need to be playing a stiff steel shaft. I am off to Golf Galaxy today to do one of their club fitting sessions and am curious if I should stick to screening in the Taylor Mades or be open to the Maltby's etc. I know I hit the Taylor Made's well. Also do you see any value in doing a club fitting with Golf Galaxy and then another fitting with my pro to see if they have consistent opinions?
Thanks for making this an enjoyable thread.

While there are better options out there than the Taylormade 2.0's (from an engineering standpoint), if you hit them well then who am I to tell you otherwise?

With that being said, know that the reason you were "killing" them is the fact that the lofts and lengths on the irons are nuked. That is the 5-iron in the Burner set, is effectively a 4 iron in almost all other sets. While this inevitably makes then longer and "hotter" you are also sacrificing accuracy. There is always a trade off in golf.

Also, the fact that you were hitting graphite shafts make the clubs effective weight that much lighter, which will ultimately increase distance but sacrifice accuracy as well.

With that being said, if the irons were working for you, go for it; however, I would agree with your pro in that if you are still fit as a stiff steel, then go with the stiff steel.

It would also be beneficial to you to be fit by both. The Galaxy will give you the launch monitor data, which is invaluable. The fitting with your pro will give you the opportunity to see ball flight outdoors. If you have the means to do both, I would suggest doing both.

And if you were willing to look to other clubs, your fitting numbers do not change anything. You can't be "fit" for a specific set of irons. You can only be fit to your spec. So if you are 2 degrees upright and 1/4" short on your Taylormade Burner fitting, that is easily converted to any other brand of golf club.

For example, let's say you get fit for the burners (a 6 iron) at 2 degrees up and 1/4" short, but you decide that you like the Callaway Razr X Tour irons better. Your specs for the Callaway's would be 3 degrees upright because the lie angle is 61.5* compared to 62.5* on the burners as standard. Your length would also be 1/8" short on the Callaway's as compared to the Taylormade because of the differences in the standard.

Hope that makes sense. That's a lot of info quick...

Posted on 6/8 8:34 AM | IP: Logged

Thank you. Makes perfect sense. I will do both sessions.

If this is a DP, sorry about that (can't see my previous post for some reason). I was going to ask what you thought of the DSG grinds from the cleveland wedges and see how they stack up versus some of the better grinds from vokey.

Very similar to the TVD grind by vokey. It all comes down to preference at that point. Personally? I prefer the TVD as it has a slightly more rounded toe on the sole, but slightly more square actual toe.

With that being said, these are the wedges I play... In a 54 Black and a 58 Red.

I'm about a 12-13 handicap as well and I did purchase the Maltby Tricept TU iron head with project x shafts after extensive research and discussions with TOH. Fantastic combo and by far my best purchase for my golf game. The amazing consistency you get in the shafts far outweighs the cost you'd pay for the name brand iron heads in my opinion as I tried out the Ping G15's, Tit AP1's, and a few more. The TU iron heads are exceptional to hit and very forgiving. They weren't nearly as clunky as the G15 which is why I went with the TU iron head over the G15 and a few more.

AT, how old are your X-14's? I was get sitting here thinking that I buy new clubs every 5 to 10 years, so a good interim step is to get them regripped and reshafted. Not sure of the improvement that makes, and how much club head technology changes in 5 to 10 years.

Got them in 03. Regrip them about every 2 years.

The shaft shouldn't wear. I just want to go to graphite, and get a shaft that isn 't quite as stiff on my aging bones.

I was told by my pro when I started this that the X14's were solid, even against today's clubs. I'm starting to believe him.

TOH (or anyone), any thoughts on the Project X graphites? I was hitting a Titleist 910 D3 8.5 (C3 setting) into a screen today with several shafts and liked the Tour Issue X-7C3. Gonna try to take one to the course or range next weekend.

Posted on 6/5 10:50 PM | IP: Logged

TOH had great things to say about the shaft and recommended that I strongly consider putting it in my 3 wood.

Posted on 6/5 11:15 PM | IP: Logged

Cool. Looking forward to trying it on the course.

And with that, we have 10 pages of off season golf talk.

Posted on 6/5 11:19 PM | IP: Logged

H4life, to be honest with you, all of the irons, with the exception of the TM's, felt good and I would have been happy with any of those three sets. I was expecting a large disparity. Maybe I am just easy to please. I also really liked the Callaway driver, but the tie went to the TM.

What is the leading recommendation on the best mid priced golf balls for high handicappers with a good swing speed?

Posted on 6/5 10:20 AM | IP: Logged

Good call man. The callaway irons are pretty awesome irons and the R11 is just downright nasty. The difference between the TP and non TP R11 is the shaft. I got the TP because I have a relatively higher ball flight than most golfers so I got a aldila RIP in my shaft; however, the blur 70 is a great shaft according to TOH and it's what I got in my TM 3 and 5 wood so I think you'll be just fine. Let us know how it goes once all your new gear comes in!

TOH... puring a shaft? Real or a myth? You read so much about people saying it's such a big deal and then you read other people saying it means nothing...

It's interesting... It does make a difference for sure, but not nearly as big as it used to be. It can affect consistency but it CANNOT affect ball flight, or else it would be non-conforming.

Basically, it comes down to preference. All it is going to affect is consistency and it used to be a much bigger deal than today. The high quality Steel shafts are usually fine and the difference will be minimal.

Any Graphite shaft over $200 will have been pured at a factory before paint was applied so you know that you are getting supreme consistency with a quality product.

In summary, if I was still playing for money, I would have my shafts pured (or spined, same thing) but it is not necessary for playing good golf.

The RAZR X are far superior in my opinion. Both from a design stand point and feel.

I didn't read it, but to bump it three times in a row to keep it going is what is lame.

I have been lurking on the whole thead. There was a lot of interesting information. I just completed an extensive club fitting process with a fitter that is ranked in the top 100 by Golf Digest. I don't think that means that much as compared to other club fitters but it does mean that the fitter has met some standards and this fitter does it for a living.

i went with the expectation that I would be fitted with a new driver that would match my swing with the best shaft and head to maximize my carry and roll. I was disappointed as my Callaway FX-IQ matched up perfectly with my swing so I could not gain yards by a better matched driver. I will have to increase my swing speed or remain shorter than I want to be. Older age has some nice benefits but in length off the tee.

My current irons were Callaway FX-20's with a callaway installed standard graphite regular flex shaft. I liked that the graphite shafts reduced shock to my bad lower back but I never was comfortable with their accuracy. The video equipment of the fitter showed the shape of the shaft at contact and it resembled a J hook. He had me hit some mitsubishi graphite shafts and some KBS steel shafts in some demo clubs that he had. I was more accurate. We finally settled on Miura heads for my six iron thru sand wedges (51 and 56 degree wedges). He equipped the 6 thru pitching wedge with KBS tour 90 shafts. He equipped the sand and gap wedges with KBS Hi Rev shafts. I had an old set of Ping G5's that had hybrid iron heads for the 3,4, and 5 irons. Ping only made the hybrid G5 for one year. I hit them great at the testing as compared to any of the demo clubs so I kept them as with their standard shafts. All my irons were tipped upright by 2 degrees.

I read Ohio's comments on the miura heads and respectfully reply that I love the heads and hit them with a nice trajectory that is a little high but gets the ball air borne easy which I like. I realize that the shafts are a huge part of the equation and that the heads and the shaft work in tandem to control trajectory. The combinaiton works for my swing. I don't know where the CG is on the miura heads and I don't care. I adore the clubs and hit them better than any clubs that I have ever owned. They have a great feel on contackt. I especially love chipping with them. The wedges are also super. I can control trajectory, accuracy, and distance easier than ever before. I was palying wiht Titelist Volkeys which are good but not in the miura class in my opinion but that could be becasue of the shaft. The KBS Hi Rev is a great shaft for wedges.

I wanted to buy some irons for my grandson for a graduation present. Thanks to the discussions on this thread and Ohio's analysis of so many clubs. I bought a set of Ping Anser irons with stiff KBS Tour shafts for him. He had hit at a demo day a few weeks ago so I know his wing speed and preferred lie angle. The clubs came today and I went out and hit them side by side against my miuras and ping hybrid irons. I was a little longer with my clubs due to the lighter and more flexible Tour 90 shaft but I really liked the feel of the anser irons which hit very similar to my miuras. What was striking was the difference in hitting the anser 5 iron against my Ping g5 hybrid iron. I was easily 20 yards longer with the G5 iron and its higher flight allowed the ball to land softly. I love forged heads for the shorter control clubs but give me a more forgiving club for the long irons any day.

Thanks again to all that posted with information. I would not have honed in to the anser irons for my grandson without the information on this thread. I realized after all of the reivews on this thread that the anser would be a good club for him. He hits a 7 iron 170 yards so he needs dispersion control more than distance. Special Kudos to Ohio Horn for helping not only me but many other posters with his extencsive knowledge.

I try to keep everything as objective as possible, but I usually speak from a purely engineering standpoint.

With that being said, does that mean that I play the most "playable" irons out there? No. In fact, I could play a lot more playable of an iron, but I have preferences just like anyone else and when it comes down to it... It is about confidence. It doesn't matter where the CG is if you hit it on the sweet spot.

With that being said, the golf club technology that is out there today can help improve your game and make the game more fun for 99.9% of people.

I just wanted to use this thread as a medium to help my fellow Orangebloods get the most out of their golf equipment and help them enjoy the game that I love so passionately. If you love the Miura irons, and hit them well... who am I to tell you to play something different? Everyone's swing is different and just because one club might have better engineering and better Mass Dimensional Characteristics, doesn't mean it is the right club for everyone. No doubt that Miura makes a very high quality forging and you could in fact play many many much worse options (the R9 iron comes to mind... just abysmal).

So i'm just happy I could help and for anyone who cares enough, here is what I am gaming right now: This would be the bag I would use in a tournament.

Taylormade R11 8* - UST Mamiya ATTAS 7X
Cleveland Launcher 15* Prototype (2006) - UST Mamiya Axiv Core Green 86X
Nickent 6DT 17* Hybrid - Arthur XTreme XCalibur Tour X Stiff
Maltby MMB (3i-PW) - Dynamic Gold X100 Tipped 1/2"
Maltby Tricept Black 54* - Rifle Spinner 6.0
Titleist Vokey Black Oxide TVD M 58* - Rifle Spinner 6.0
Ping Redwood Series Zing 34"

All Irons are 1* Upright and Wedges are 1* Flat. All Clubs are 1/2" Long with Red and White Golf Pride VDR Grips with 1 extra wrap of tape under the right hand.

Ball: Going back and forth between the Taylormade Penta and Titleist Pro V1X. Haven't hit enough shots with the new PV1X to make a true decision.

And you all owe me a beer next time I'm in Austin. If we could get a legit Orangeblood Golf Outing... I would be there in a heartbeat. Let's make it happen.

Ohio, I have both my wedges and my irons 2 degrees upright. When I was fitted for my irons that was the best position, so I just went and got my wedges bent to the same degree. Is there a reason your wedges are bent 1 degree flat when your irons are 1 degree upright? Are they fitted for non-regular swing shots?

I probably need to get all of mine looked at again, as my swing is much more on plane than it used to be (used to swing too upright).

It is just a preference thing, but there is a very specific reason why I have it this way. Because I tend to play a variety of different shots with a variety of different attack angles with my wedges, I find the flatter lie angle to be more optimal for me.

For example, I have no trouble keeping my wedges low, but I believe in Hogan's 4 Laws:

1. If the pin is on the left, draw the ball to the pin.
2. If the pin is on the right, fade the ball to the pin.
3. If the pin is in the back, bring the shot in low
4. If the pin is up front, bring the shot in high.

So because I can keep the ball low due to very litte wrist action in my swing, I find that having my wedges slightly flat helps me manipulate my trajectroy more easily, that is, hit the ball higher more easily.

I can still bring it in low when I need to, but because of the flatter lie angle, I am able to open my stance and shoulders and aim right of my target knowing that the flatter lie angle is going to make the ball start right of where I am aiming. This ability to open my self up lets me freely slide the club under the ball and get a higher trajectory when I want it to. In short, it helps me control my trajectory.

If you can control your trajectory, you can control accuracy.

I DO NOT recommend this for everyone and it took years of practice and playing to fine tune everything and decide that this what what would work for me. For most players, having the same lie angle as your irons is optimal. But if you find yourself struggling and tending to miss your target left with your wedges, you might consider going flatter on your lie angles with the wedges.

Thanks. I need to get my lie angles looked at again and with all my irons and wedges, really.

When I get some time and extra money, I'm going to get fitted for a new driver (leaning 910) and maybe a hybrid to replace my 2 iron when the course calls for it. What do you think of the 910H? I've never carried a hybrid but enjoyed messing around with them on the range. Obviously it would take some getting used to and a lot of course work to see what shots I can play with it.

Whatever you do, if your willing to drop some money on a driver, don't buy one until you try the R11. It is absolutely fantastic!

Have you adjusted the clubface or you just hitting it with the standard settings?

Can't speak for H4L, but I have an 8*, 1/2* Open Face (which makes the effective loft 8.5*) with a Neutral Sole Plate and the heavy 10g weight in the toe.

The Sole plate does nothing for the golf club and is purely there for show. You are not striking the ground with the driver so changing the face angle with the sole plate is irrelevant unless you put the club down and let the sole plate close or open the face, AND THEN take your grip, which I have never seen anyone do.

At any rate, if you do get the R11, you need to immediately put the heavy weight in the toe. Due to the design (with the interchangeable hosel and sole plate that trends toward the heel), the CG is moved SLIGHTLY toward the heel of the club because of this extra weight. It is slight, but it does make a difference. By moving the heavy weight to the toe, you effectively move the CG into the dead center of the face. A slight design flaw but easily correctable.

I hit the 9* and have the weights shifted around like TOH explained. It's a very forgiving and long driver and much easier to keep in the fairway than anything I've hit in the past.

Got my Ansers back with project X 6.5's.

I will squeeze some time in at some point to get to range. Of course I am slammed with work. Feel fortunate to be but would love an aftertoon to get on the course.

And your handicap?

got an update on the penta's. I went out today and played. Not the best conditions for scoring but good for testing out balls to see how they launch and react in the stiff wind. The penta's definitely launch higher than the prov1x's, but for me, that was a good thing. I hit an 8* ping i5 driver with and extra stiff shaft, so getting a littler higher launch off the tee isn't a bad thing. The prov1x launched a little low, but still good. The penta, for me, is the optimal launch angle, maximizing my drives.

I don't feel like I lost any distance even into the wind and it definitely spun more on the greens than the prov1x. The pure shots felt amazing and there isn't anything about this ball that I don't like.

I plan on keeping the penta's in my bag as long as I can find them cheap enough.

I played the pentas this weekend as well and really, really like them. No loss of distance whatsoever and I feel they got more bite and feel around the greens. Both balls are great, but the pentas are going for a great price when compared to the pro v1x

Anyone played the Mizuno JPX 800 irons. I know Mizunos are generally popular for the low handicap players, which I'm not, but I've hit these a few times over the last couple of weeks and really like them. Wondering if anyone else has had experience with them or a similar model?
