We could have made this a a two-deep roster had we gone all the back to the beginning of the Mack era (Hello, Adam Black), but we decided to keep this focused on players that who have come through since the coining of the phrase.

Interesting stuff.

Link: Breaking down the Best of the Mack Brown Curse

Awesome!

Posted on 11/9 9:49 PM | IP: Logged

Great work! This should be required reading for all recruits.

Posted on 11/9 9:53 PM | IP: Logged

This may be GK's best work product ever......

Amazing.

Fear the CURSE!

I. LOVE. THIS.

Posted on 11/9 10:02 PM | IP: Logged

Ketch no Granger? He's a 5 star bust if I've ever seen one.

Posted on 11/9 10:02 PM | IP: Logged

this write up has been long awaited and should be uploaded on wikipedia haha

"his college career might as well be a case of lost and never found, unless of course you're referring to his wide receiver glove with his number on it that was discovered at the scene after a break-in of a teammate's apartment."

instant classic. hahaha. good stuff

Posted on 11/9 10:08 PM | IP: Logged

Wow I had forgotten about half those guys.

Posted on 11/9 10:11 PM | IP: Logged

A sobering read for those who beg us to recruit OOS.

Posted on 11/9 10:11 PM | IP: Logged

Great article. The only thing I would say is that on a couple of these guys there is no mention of their involvement with Texas/Mack, so while it's clear they were busts, there's not really any indication of what it has to do with the curse at all.

I love it. In a lot of ways you can say we were lucky to miss out on those guys.

Posted on 11/9 10:12 PM | IP: Logged

Come on......no Jimmy Sutton?

What about that goofy OL that committed to K-state?

Posted on 11/9 10:14 PM | IP: Logged

Allow me to be the voice of dissent. I always thought this curse business was silly as best and nonsense at worst. When you compare "the curse" to the overall percentage of recruits who never pan out, it has no statistical significance.

And I'd also tap the breaks on E. Moody and R.J. Jackson (especially R.J. who was/is a good kid who never jerked Mack around and was very respectful on this very message board), both of whom are starting to make some noise and can still be very good players for their respective teams.

Was Xavier Lee really an option? His film was impressive. Then again, look where he went, FSU sucks offensively, so I wouldn't put all the fault on him.

We'll see what their new highly touted freshman can do now that Ponder is out.

I disagree Ketchum. Kids who don't have a clue at 16 or 17 for whatever reason and choose something else given they are not completely informed. And we dwell on their mistakes? I bet everyone of those kids wish their lives turned out differently. I'm sure every one of them wishes they went to Texas instead. But to publish these kids problems later in life is low in my opinion. How about publishing all the Texas kids who came here and didn't make it? Where are they? I think you should stick with positives and not negatives.

Great Article. It would be interesting to know what happened to the recruits prior to 2003 as well.

Chris Boggas? He should have made it.

Expected to see Granger on the list.

It is all in good fun, kids.

Great work! Only thing missing is a prediction on this year's unfortunate candidates. My early guess is the receiver out of Dallas. We shall see...

i crack up at the guys who pretend to be other people on the phone. that's gotta be annoying for someone trying to call for an update.

Man, I thought I took OB too seriously sometimes.....

Boggas was considered to be a player whose choice happened before the beginning of the curse era.

He certainly should have been on there.

Posted on 11/9 10:41 PM | IP: Logged

BTW, I see that a few people are not a fan of the article. This is a pretty well-known topic that's been discussed in the media all of the nation.

Mack's been asked about it at various times, although he's declined to really comment as you might expect.

The bottom line is that we're not breaking new ground in the discussion. We're just looking back at the topic that people are already discussing quite a bit.

Their stories are part of history and they'll be talked about for decades, just like those came before them.

Guys like Mohetau and Bomar are important footnotes in the history of the program when you look at where Mack Brown has taken the program.

I also don't think this is anything that isn't already discussed in the main stream. There have been newspaper columns about it in recent years.

Posted on 11/9 10:49 PM | IP: Logged

Great article. Loved every word of it. And since I'm just a month to month guy anyway, I was going to cancel this week until things "picked up" again.
But instead, I'll maintain my subscription just to make up for the ridiculous and illogical cancellation announced above.

Posted on 11/9 10:54 PM | IP: Logged

Ketch, that was a very entertaining read, but I do agree that you should leave this kind of stuff to the members of OB, who have no moral or business obligation to remain above the fray.

I also think the MBC should be reserved for people who really jerk us around rather than kids who simply chose another school and didn't pan out. RP, Bomar, and Darrell Scott epitomize the curse. Some of those other kids just don't deserve to be included though. As others have mentioned, every school has their fair share of guys who don't live up to the hype.

Posted on 11/9 10:56 PM | IP: Logged

Why exactly is Kyle Wright on the list? Did he badmouth UT or lead MB on? I was discussing him with an ex-Miami Rivals writer and he said Wright never considered UT seriously.

Posted on 11/9 10:58 PM | IP: Logged

Great stuff.

I was not aware that the 'curse' is known outside of the Longhorn circle.

Hopefully Mack leaves Will his MBC kit when he decides to step down. Do you think Mack has a cape? Happy

I agree. He needs to be taken off. Kirby Freeman should have been on it.

Derke(or was it Derek) Robinson?

that was a peculiar set of circumstances as I recall

Posted on 11/9 11:04 PM | IP: Logged

Couple of comments and observations:

- this must be good therapy for the OB staff on some of these guys who were total flakes during the recruiting process

- seems like a long time since we missed on a QB recruit - maybe since about the time Vince led the nation in pass efficiency and Colt was Frosh of the Year. Before that - ugh.

- i would be interested in a list of the candidates eligible for this award versus those actually "cursed." we miss on so few recruits that we go after hard that the eligible list recently is pretty short.

- Chris Boggas has to be on that list.

- Others off the top of my head: Jason Frederick, nearly everyone else that signed with A&M between 2002 and 2005, the WR that signed with Tennessee a few years ago, ....

- the one DB on the list was a reach as a "curse." that is because we are DBU and we don't miss on just about anyone we like. the verdict is out on how hard we pursued the two safeties last year and how they pan out.

- fun read for us. for the people on the list...not so much. Wink

FYI, most of the comments and praise should go to Suchomel. This was his pet project and we all teamed up to help him.

Why is bomar an important footnote? or Perriloux? They didn't come here and we have been fine. They are just kids who made decisions like kids do with awful advice from whomever their advisors were. Is it part of the story to follow their downfall from not accepting a Texas offer? We probably get more offers accepted as a % than any school in the country. The actual curse is the 5 star players in HS around the country that don't pan out in college football. Life happens.

I get asked about it a lot when I do OOS radio.

Awesome article Ketch (or Such) and great read. Although I do agree that some of them are a little bit of a stretch, it is still amazing what spurning Mack will do to a career. I have always wanted to see The Curse listed in one article.

It never ceases to amaze me what people will complain about. I think some people are not happy if they are not complaining.

The POSTER CHILDREN of the Mack Brown Curse are:

Rhett Bomar
Periloser
Darrel Scott

Those three are/were disasters.

Posted on 11/9 11:18 PM | IP: Logged

Believe it pre-dates your list, but Albert Hollis deserves mention.

Posted on 11/9 11:19 PM | IP: Logged

What did Geoff Price do at Notre Dame?

Looking forward to seeing Jamarkus McFarland and Brantley on the updated lists in a few years.

Ketch, what are you thoughts on Richetti Jones being on it? Too early?
