Now consider all the stars in the background. They are the dense field
of stars that form the central bulge of the Milky Way galaxy.

Yes, my friends, this slice of the sky shows just a small snippet of
our own galaxy, one of billions in the universe. Contemplate on that for
a moment, wont you?

CLAIM: MANY TEXAS JOBS ARE LOW WAGE. Wages mean nothing without the
context of cost of living. California has the fourth-highest cost of
living in the nation at 132 percent of the national average. Texas has
the second-lowest cost of living at 90 percent. Thus, California's $8
minimum wage can buy $6.06 of goods and services while Texas' $7.25
minimum wage can buy the equivalent of $8.04.

"CLAIM: 17.3% OF TEXANS LIVE IN POVERTY COMPARED WITH 15.3% OF
CALIFORNIANS. The census has calculated the poverty level using the same
income threshold across the nation, regardless of cost of living. But
the census released a new Supplemental Poverty Measure that places
California's poverty rate at 23.5 percent, the nation's highest, while
dropping Texas' poverty rate to 16.5 percent. Proportionately, there are
42 percent more poor people in California than in Texas.

"CLAIM: THE INCOME GAP IS THE NATION'S FIFTH-WIDEST IN TEXAS. Not so.
A new government workers union (AFSCME) report says California has the
third-highest income inequality gap in the nation with Texas ranked
seventh. Had the report taken into account Texas' low cost of living,
Texas would not have placed in the top 10 while California would have
fared worse.

"CLAIM: 26% OF TEXANS DON'T HAVE HEALTH INSURANCE, THE HIGHEST IN THE
NATION. This claim is driven by Medicaid coverage (called Medi-Cal in
California). If the purpose of coverage is to access health care, then
the 9.2 million Californians who rely on Medi-Cal have a serious problem
because California's low reimbursement rate to doctors have forced half
of them to refuse to see Medi-Cal patients.

"CLAIM: TEXAS RANKS LAST FOR ADULTS WITH HIGH-SCHOOL DIPLOMAS. True,
but California ranks third-last, barely ahead of Mississippi. Further,
this statistic is tied to the number of foreign-born residents, not the
effectiveness of schools where, according to the U.S. Department of
Education, Texas graduates a higher percentage of high school students
than does California and a far higher percentage of Hispanic high school
students, a key plurality in both states.

"CLAIM:  TEXAS SAT SCORES RANK 45TH. Less than half of students take
the SAT, rendering it an unsound metric even as Texas SAT participation
rates have climbed rapidly. The National Assessment of Educational
Progress is a better measure because most students take it. NAEP results
among the eight biggest states show that Texas students are the best
overall and place in the top by racial and ethnic group, too. California
is consistently last."

(here's a link to the data: http://soquelbythecreek.blogsp...

"An honest discussion regarding the two biggest states matters
because they are more alike than different in terms of natural resources
and demographics. Where they diverge is in their governance: GOVERNMENT
IS ABOUT 33 PERCENT LARGER AS A SHARE OF THE ECONOMY in California than
in Texas.

"If California is supposed to represent all that is good about
America's liberal future, then why does it have the nation's highest
poverty rate? The Texas model produces more prosperity for more people.
Open-minded Californians should ask themselves why."

He's already a lame duck. He won't even be on the ballot in 2012.

I would love that, but two points:

1. People were saying that about Clinton in '94. I realize that Clinton was willing to sell out his own party and move to the center in order to stay in power and Obama probably isn't. Still, it's a long time and anything can happen such as the economy getting better just before the election.

2. Let's see who Republicans nominate. I never underestimate my party's ability to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

Obama won't be on the ballot in 2012.

The House Judiciary Committee will see to that.

Obama will be playing ball with the GOP, but not because he wants to. This way, he gets to finish and go home and receive a pension and honorariums.

LOL what a trip.

Never underestimate the power of an economic recovery....see Reagan and Clinton.

Let's not also forget Palin and Tea Party. They have been masterful at splitting the right. That and the notion of Palin running the country should send the independents and conservatives running.

Posted on 12/3 5:11 PM | IP: Logged

Palin scares me, but not even an economic recovery can save Obama. IMHO.

Posted on 12/3 7:24 PM | IP: Logged

Uh yes it can. It may not even take an strong recoveery. Depends on which re=tread the gop decides to go with.

Fundamentalist make up the gop base and I know that they are very loud and angry but a reasonable economic recovery or a combination of good news from a couple of different fronts would spell a landslide over Palin, who will most likely be the nominee.

I will worry about his safety if he wins BIG in 2012.

Posted on 12/3 7:30 PM | IP: Logged

People will not forget how he has bashed our country and for what gains? N. Korea. Russia. Iran. And the list goes on and on.

Posted on 12/3 10:10 PM | IP: Logged

lol at the angry rhetoric.

Bashing.roll

Posted on 12/4 12:13 AM | IP: Logged

an economic recovery makes obama pretty close to unbeatable. by economic recovery, i mean unemployments rates of 6%. also, as other have alluded to, it does matter who the gop rolls out.

Posted on 12/4 11:16 AM | IP: Logged

So many people with so many opinions of exactly what is going to happen in 2012 when the 2012 election will likely be determined by things yet to even be factored into the equation.

Posted on 12/4 12:01 PM | IP: Logged

Obamacare. It will be a gift that keeps giving to the Republican party.

Cap and trade. Will be another gift that keeps giving.

Obama is a worse president than Jimmy Carter.

Bill moved to the center, Obama can't.

Out of all the democratic candidates that were out their for 2008, I felt the same way about Obama and he is now in the White House.

Don't ever underestimate the lack of intelligence of the American voter.

The people that won't forgive him for any indiscretions are the ones that didn't like him to begin with. There are a lot of those people, but if the economy is in better shape, and unemployment is going down, there will be plenty of people that believe a divided government is the best way to go.

When Bush and Obama had both sides of Congress, things didn't turn out so well for our country. But the economic recovery, to the extent there is one, will be the key in the 2012 elections.

Unemployment of 6% by 2012 is a pipe dream.

Given Obama's refusal to embrace the free market, I expect another 2 years of double-digit unemployment. the Dems have no concept of how to repaitr the dmage they have done to the economy. They are rabid ideologues unable to change course when their policies fail miserably.

What a load of right-wing bs. Even a moderate reduction in unemployment, to say 7 or 7.5% will be enough to convince voters Obama has been and will remain the right man for the job.

All he will need to do is remind the voters he repaired the extensive damage the Republicans did to the market and economy. That and the fact he followed through on his promises to ensure access to affordable care by signing into law health care reform; and his promise to protect our individual financial worth and stability by implementing protections against the fraud and deceit we saw from the GOP's deregulation of the market. Not to mention he has bent over backwards to help small businesses stay afloat and be in position to prosper when a recovery is sustained. And of course, there are the troops he has promised to bring home, which will be completed come election time. Voters will understand everything he has done and sacrificed to get nation back on track.. It won't even be close, especially if he is running against a radical TP candidate like, say, Sarah Palin who wouldn't stand a chance with libertarians and independents.

I will worry about his safety if he wins BIG in 2012.

funny. an economic recovery, just like under Clinton, will be at the hands of a Conservative congress ( or conservative principles) ...and then BO will take credit for it as Clinton did

Posted on 1/8 8:19 AM | IP: Logged

Spin it however you want. No matter how loud and how long you claim that Boehner and Cantor get the credit for the economy will not matter because everyone knows that is simply not true.

I wont bring Clinton up but lol at your revisionist history.

Your leader could very well get reelected if HIS economic recovery picks up more steam. Boehner and Cantor are not in the picture.

Those two are too unpatriotic to even admit any good news yesterday.

Well stated, tedde.

Let's not forget the POTUS has the leverage (although Obama, unlike Clinton, has not used it to his advantage) and power to shape tax policy that is beneficial for the public and economy, not the members of Congress.

Polls say that BHO would beat Palin, Romney, Huckabee, Pawlenty and Paul. When he wins in 2012 you have permission to leave our country.

What's great about this is Republicans suspecting their party is viable and their resume shiny. The fact current polls project Obama to beat any proposed GOP candidates...by substantial margins....says a lot about the faith folks have in the GOP.

A long time to the 2012 election, but the Republicans are way to giddy about the results of the mid term elections.

Given the economic policies of this loser, we won't see unemployment below 8.5% for three years minimum. They are hell-bent on destroying our economic base.

This is hilarious, completely predictable, but hilarious nonetheless. Republicans chiding others for destroying an economic base...great stuff. From the party that squandered a surplus, created a massive deficit, spurned high unemployment, and laid foundation for what was the Great Recession.

This all depends on who the GOP candidate ends up being. If we get an old re-tread or Palin, we are toast. We need a new fresh face that can speak intelligently about the economy, taxes, and what we can do to protect our country and our interests from terrorists.

If not, Obama will be like Clinton, move to the center and take credit for what the Repubs can do to block his liberal agenda in the meantime.

useful idiot:
1: term invented in Soviet Russia to describe people who blindly supported the likes of Lenin and Stalin while they committed atrocity after atrocity.
2: unthinking proponent of socialism and/or communism usually found swarming the internet, participating in riots to promote tolerance, attempting to think up questions for themselves to answer, or sitting in Starbucks with friends discussing the failings of capitalism over a light frappuccino.

Good luck finding a Republican that can speak intelligently about tax policy, reduced spending and deficit reduction. Fiscal conservatism hasn't been a priority of the GOP for some time now.

As for the comparison with Clinton, unlike Bill, Obama has a split Congress. The Republicans can't attempt to strong-arm the president by threatening him with massive govt. job losses. The Senate can and will block their dirty tactics aimed at undermining our progress.

However, I don't see Obama having the balls to stand up to the GOP and their acts of intimidation (he already caved on the tax cut extension). That was what so great about Clinton: part of his brilliancy was his ability to resist GOP political bullying and use their leverage against them. This allowed him to achieve compromise on his own terms, which proved his ability to lead.
