It's funny how I can't remember the first football game I watched or the first baseball game, but I sure remember all my wrestling firsts.

First match I saw on TV involved the Fabulous Blonds on some podunk regional broadcast. I remember being absolutely terrifed of Eric Embry.

First live show was the Parade of Champions tribute to David Von Erich at Texas Stadium when Kerry beat Flair for the strap with a backslide. God that was a good day.

And I remember watching the Superstation in 1989 when Sid Vicious and Mark Callaway were the Twin Towers or something like that. Sid pressed some jobber above his head and threw him out of the ring onto the concrete. It was then I knew wrestling was changing.

Oh I also remember writing a story for the newspaper when WCW came to Midland one time. I got a sit down with Dean Malenko, and he was terrific. As I was standing by the aisle during the show, Terry Taylor came up next to me and shot the breeze for a good hour. He was as nice as they come, but the whole time u couldn't help but picture him with a red mohawk squaking like a damn rooster. Never asked him about that though.

Its also crazy to watch how they started to push the limit as time went on.

I want to know how guys survive 25 ft swanton bombs and 40 ft elbow drops.

Don't think that they do survive unscathed. The regular stuff can hurt, so the extreme stuff will really hurt. Second, numbers can be way inflated. 25 feet is actually closer to 12, maybe 15 feet. Third, if you notice, those extreme moves are more often than not done to someone lying on a table or a ladder, and everything collapese. The impact of the move is absorved by the table, and the momentum is disbursed by the breaking of the table, or the collapsing of the ladder. Foley, for example was supposed to land directly on the Spanish Announce Table, which would have absorbdd the impact of him being thrown from the top of the cell by collapsing. the problem was that Mick didn't hit it square.

According to wrestling lore, Jimmhy Snuka jumped 15 feet off the top of the cage onto Don Muraco. I always thought the cage was maybe 8 feet high (check it out on YouTube).

At his worst, Eddie was taking obscene amounts of Vicodin per day.

Louie Spicoli was swallowing handfuls of Somas at a time. I looked so much like hiim that Tharpe called me "Little Louie."

Art Barr was just as bad.

All three of Los Gringos Locos dead...

Those are three of the reasons I hate the business.

I just watched the video of Austin driving in his own personal truck, the Zamboni, the Cement truck, the Beer truck and now the monster truck. I cant remember anyone doing that before and he did it at least 5 times. Gotta love Austin.

I also love Austin's smoking skull belt. That was the single biggest factor in me becoming a fan of his. I can only think of Cena as the only other person that didnt wear the standard Title belt.

A few years ago WWE moved to PG programming. No more swearing, blood, chair shots to the head(that's a good idea), piledrivers(tombstone is an exception), powerbombs(variations are allowed ie Batista Bomb, Last Ride, Spin out Powerbomb but only for big time stars). I remember distinctly at a PPV last year where Christian was cut open accidentally during the match and trainers came out to clean his head up DURING THE MATCH. Everything stopped while they made sure a little bitty cut didn't make him bleed out or anything like that.

Also, Brian Danielson(Daniel Bryan in WWE) was legitimately fired last year after the people from NXT(later forming The Nexus) choked out one of the young ringside hands with his tie when The Nexus formed. Fans were OUTRAGED. About 2 months later, WWE rehired him since fans kept bringing Daniel Bryan signs to events.

That's why I prefer the Indy shows. I'm not a fan who needs blood, but it can be a cool part of the show. Last night my fiance and I went to a Indy show here in Austin, I was a magnet for flying blood.

As far as bigger promotions, Ring of Honor and Dragon Gate USA do a great job and have tremendously talented wrestlers.

I just watched the Millennium countdown with Jericho. I loved him. So good at getting the crowd involved. The ovation he got when he debuted with the Rock in the ring gave me chills. Loved his intro song, loved his pyro at the beginning and loved how it went dark and he was just standing there.

I want to know how guys survive 25 ft swanton bombs and 40 ft elbow drops.


Don't think that they do survive unscathed. The regular stuff can hurt, so the extreme stuff will really hurt. Second, numbers can be way inflated. 25 feet is actually closer to 12, maybe 15 feet.
Third, if you notice, those extreme moves are more often than not done to someone lying on
a table or a ladder, and everything collapese. The impact of the move is absorved by the
table, and the momentum is disbursed by the breaking of the table, or the collapsing of the
ladder. Foley, for example was supposed to land directly on the Spanish Announce Table,
which would have absorbdd the impact of him being thrown from the top of the cell by
collapsing. the problem was that Mick didn't hit it square.

Its funny you said that because when they show a different angle on the shane mcmahon elbow drop it only looked like 20 feet not 40.

Other than the ones I listed and the Mick Foley Hell in a Cell, my favorite "how did they survive" moment was Shawn Michaels superkick on Shelton Benjamin off the top rope.

that sweet chin music was awesome. i'll never forget that I spit my drink all over my seat when that happened. one of those "wow" moments.

Jeff Hardy is crazy, and not just in or around the ring. His current court case keeps on getting continuances and he made an absolute ass of himself a few months ago when he lost a TNA world title match in 1:30. His drug and alcohol problems are never going to go away.

The stories you guys tell on here are really fascinating. Learning about match changes and backstage stuff is always cool to me. Next time everyone is in Austin, we should get together and just have a wrestling roundtable or something. I just would love to hear some more of these stories from people who were actually there and to talk about the current landscape of the business and what all everyone would change.
