Lawrence LT Thomas a top recruit for MSU
One of the top recruits in the nation for next year will be linebacker Lawrence Thomas of Detroit Renaissance High School. Head Coach Mark Dantonio and the Spartans are hoping that Thomas decides to bring his incredible skills to East Lansing. SpartanMag.com caught up with the 6-foot-4, 232-pound prospect last night and got some details on his recruitment.
Thomas has had a busy past 6 weeks from a recruiting standpoint. Since September 1st, when school can officially offers junior prospects, Thomas has steadily picked up a host of BCS scholarship offers. Michigan State offered Thomas verbally long before then, but they made it official on that day by putting it in writing.
In addition to the Spartans, Thomas also holds scholarship offers from Michigan, Alabama, Penn State, Oklahoma, UCLA and Colorado. His early offer list is one of the most impressive in the nation. Thomas is almost certain to be a 4 or 5-star recruit and a Rivals top 100 recruit.
Thomas will likely be inundated with recruiting calls and articles over the coming months. Many of those articles will be written from other team's perspective and may not address Thomas's feelings about Michigan State. For that reason Spartanmag.com asked Thomas specifically about the Green and White.
"The things I like about Michigan State are that they have a good football program, the academic program they have is nice, the atmosphere up there in East Lansing is just awesome and the coaching staff is excellent."
A many Spartans fans are aware of; Thomas is the 2nd great linebacker prospect in 2 years to come out of Renaissance High. Current Spartan Chris Norman was one of the top linebacker prospects in the nation last year and has a very bright future at Michigan State. Thomas talked about what type of impact seeing Chris Norman go through the recruiting process has impacted him.
"Chris and I have a relationship like big brother/little brother. I go to Chris when I need help with something. He gives me pointers about what to do. I look up to Chris as a role model both academic wise and football wise. He has showed me a lot. I know Chris is going to be something special and that inspires me to try and do great thing on the field and in the classroom."
Norman will surely provide Thomas with information about the best way to handle his recruitment over the coming months. Knowing Norman's character, he will also surely not pressure Thomas into making a decision to any school unless he feels it is the right time and place.
As SpartanMag.com has reported in our prep updates, the Renaissance Phoenix have had a tough season this fall. Despite the team not having the type of season expected, Thomas has continued to elevate his level of play this fall. Teams have been doing everything they can to stay away from the play-making linebacker.
SpartanMag.com will be sure to follow-up with Thomas in the coming months. Thomas will almost certainly be an All-American level recruit once recruiting sources start awarding that distinction.
