Blackshear commits to Baylor

The third Waco Midway commitment in two years for Baylor, hometown product Beau Blackshear committed himself to signing with the Bears on Signing Day 2011 today after the Baylor staff reminded him of their own commitment to him earlier in the day.

"I had been thinking about committing to Baylor for a while now. When Coach Achuff visited me at my school today, though, I decided to go ahead and do it," Blackshear said. "I really like how it's here close to home and I really feel like the program as a whole is moving in the right direction. A big thing, too, is that my family and friends will all still get to see me play."

Coming in as an athlete, Blackshear has experience at both defensive end and tackle in Midway's 3-4 scheme.

"I played end my sophomore year and then moved to the nose halfway through the season for my junior year. That's where I'm going to play this year, as well," Blackshear said. "Mainly what coach Achuff and I have talked about is me playing inside while I am at Baylor.

At 6-foot-4, 260 pounds, Blackshear has the size to be an impact end immediately, an impact defensive tackle after some work under Baylor strength and conditioning coach, Kaz Kazadi, or possibly even as an offensive weapon at the Big slot when needed.

"I played quarterback in middle school and my freshman year, and Midway is going to use me as their goal line quarterback this year. It wouldn't surprise me if I ended up being used on offense some at Baylor," Blackshear said. "Coach Kaz is really good at what he does; I've already seen results with some of the other guys. Zach Northern walked on as a deep snapper and after a short time with Kaz, he instantly lost all his fat and started gaining all muscle. I'm excited to see that and what his program could do for my body and everything."

With additional offers from TCU, Rice, and Houston, Blackshear also Baylor over the rest in part because of the educational value and the Baylor coaching staff, as well.

"I feel like a degree from Baylor is as good as anywhere else, so that was part of it," Blackshear said. "Everyone else was recruiting me just as hard, but I really just liked all the coaches at Baylor. Coach Norwood is great, and I really like that Coach Achuff is going to be my position coach. He's very excitable and energized. "
