PA 2014 safety Henry has Terps, others on the radar
Maryland can usually pull a player or two out of Pennsylvania in any given recruiting class, and one who's on their radar for 2014 is Aliquippa safety Dravon Henry. The 6-foot, 185-pounder already holds offers from the likes of Maryland, Rutgers, Pittsburgh, West Virginia, Kent State and Toledo and should pull in a few more this fall.
"Right now it's still early, but I do like West Virginia and Rutgers a good bit, and Pitt and Maryland are going to be right in the mix, too," Henry said. "I've been to Pitt and Rutgers before, and they were nice schools, West Virginia is a school I grew up watching, and Maryland just seems like a cool place that I want to get to at some point."
Henry said he's talked to the Terps' coaches a couple times, and evidently they're recruiting him as a running back. Although Henry's primary position is safety, a few schools are looking at him as a 'back or even a receiver.
"I prefer safety, but I'll play wherever," said Henry, who is coming off a season where he rushed for 1,466 yards and 18 touchdowns to go along with 80 tackles and nine interceptions. "If it comes down to it, I'll line up anywhere on the field. [My position] isn't going to be a deal breaker."
This offseason Henry had a chance to see Rutgers and Toledo during 7-on-7 events, and he took an unofficial to Pittsburgh back in late June.
"I didn't really get around too much, but I liked the schools I did see," Henry said. "With Pitt, it's close to home, they've had a lot of good DB's go through there like Darrelle Revis and Jonathan Baldwin, and I like their coaches.
"Then Rutgers, I had a nice tour of the campus and I liked the town itself; the coaches were real cool, too," he continued. "And Toledo, I got to see a little bit of them, and that seemed like a nice place to be."
Henry hasn't been to Maryland yet, but he wants to head down this fall or after his junior season. He has, however, driven through the College Park area and said he could see himself spending his college career there.
"Maryland seems like a cool place," Henry said. "I liked the area down there and I have family down there, too. My one cousin goes to school at Maryland, actually."
Another school he wants to check out is West Virginia. He said he's "definitely" getting down to Morgantown for a game this fall and is eager to see what the school has to offer.
"My one cousin, Charles Fisher, actually played for WVU and he sort of introduced me to them," Henry said. "It's a school I've liked for a long time."
Now that his season's about to start, Henry doesn't want to make any definite plans for the fall, other than heading down to Morgantown for a game. His recruiting will start in earnest after the year ends.
"I'm going to be getting out to a lot more places next offseason, probably to Maryland, West Virginia and a few others," Henry said. "But right now I just want to have another big year."
