Is Gray's visit to UCLA cause for concern?

It happens every year, almost without fail. A recruit forms tight bonds with several coaching staffs, and even after making a choice about where to go to school, that recruit goes ahead and takes an official visit to one of the schools he was previously considering.

Such was the case with Joel Gray last weekend, when he took an official visit to UCLA.

"It was a lot of fun," said Gray of his visit. "It was really a nice trip. I've been wanting to visit UCLA and the L.A. area since I was about 10 years old, so it was a fun time. I became really cool with the UCLA coaches in late July, which just so happened to be the time I was deciding to go to Tech, and since I had already kind of made that decision, I didn't ever visit UCLA. So this was an opportunity to do that."

And even though Gray had only good things to say about his time in California, the 6-foot-6, 280-pound lineman says nothing has changed.

"I'm still in love with Tech, I'm still 100% committed to Tech," he explained. "I still love the program, the town, everything. I talked to the coaches on Monday, they came by the school, and I just told them that, you know, I'm still fully on board, and they know that. It's all good, there's nothing going on there."

In the end, the three-star prospect says that in spite of the great time he had out in L.A., distance would always be a factor.
"That is a long ways from home, I'll tell you that," he laughed. "I'm a Texas boy through and through, and that's a long ways off. I'm not sure I could have ever handled that anyways."

As evidence of the firmness of his commitment to the Red Raiders, Gray did indeed confirm the visit with Tech's staff before taking it.

"I talked to Coach Riley and Coach Moore about it," he said. "They were pretty cool about it. I mean, obviously, they don't want me doing it very often and that sort of thing, and they certainly don't want me changing my commitment, but they were cool with it."
