Lake Travis names Carter as football coach
Rather than go through a statewide Who's Who of Coaches across the state, Lake Travis decided to go with a promising coaching prospect of its own and named 33-year-old Hank Carter as its head coach Friday afternoon.
Carter is a protege of former Cavs coach Chad Morris, who left two weeks ago to become a co-offensive coordinator at Tulsa University. Carter played for Morris at Eustace in East Texas and began working for Morris while still attending UT-Tyler.
Carter is a defensive coordinator but has been tabbed by Morris as one of the state's top young coaches and has worked with Morris for nearly 10 years.
Morris had strongly recommended to Lake Travis that Carter be promoted and Carter has been the interim head coach. Lake Travis is also expected to keep offensive coordinator Matt Green has another key factor in the move.
Lake Travis is a three-time defending Class 4A state with a 46-game winning streak. Since its last loss, a 28-21 defeat to Westlake in September of 2007, Lake Travis has had three different coaches.
Former LT coach Jeff Dicus surprisingly left for Duncanville after the 2007 state championship. Lake Travis considered several top candidates from around the state including Denton Ryan coach Joey Florence and Brownwood coach Bob Shipley (at Coppell at the time) before landing on Morris, who had won state titles at Bay City.
Morris arrived his staff _ including Carter _ from Stephenville and hasn't lost a game in two years while making the transition from highly touted quarterback Garrett Gilbert to newcomer Michael Brewer.
