Sources: Bergeron Receives Unconditional Release
Senior running back Joe Bergeron has received an unconditional release from his scholarship, a source close to the situation told Orangebloods.com Tuesday evening.
Orangebloods first broke the news of his dismissal Friday morning.
According to one source, Bergeron attempted to appeal his dismissal, but the appeal was denied by the school.
He was one of the four players who were dismissed last week due to a violation of team rules. Texas officials have not publicly commented on or confirmed any of the recent dismissals.
Bergeron's situation has been unique since Charlie Strong took over in January.
Orangebloods.com first reported Bergeron would miss the majority of spring practice at Strong's request to focus on academics. He returned to the team following the spring semester and was expected to be back in the mix heading into fall camp.
"He'll be back in the mix," Strong said of Bergeron at Big 12 media days. "He has done everything we've asked him to do, not only academically but just showing up doing those little things.
"When you take something away from a player and when you take something away that they really enjoy doing, then you can see a lot of change, and that changes very quickly if it's important to them."
A source said West Texas A&M University has shown interest in Bergeron, but he has not made a final decision on where he plans to transfer.
During his three seasons at Texas, Bergeron rushed for 1,392 yards and 25 touchdowns.
