Brewer learning from the best this summer

Lake Travis is home to one of the top signal callers in the country and the reigning state champions, but while Texas commit Garrett Gilbert is still working on coming back from off-season shoulder surgery, it's allowed sophomore Michael Brewer more time and experience running the Cavalier offense in his place.

Although only a sophomore in high school, Brewer is already earning a lot of attention state-wide and should be a highly sought after player in the next few years. With his signing day almost three full years away, Michael has a more immediate goal - winning the Texas State 7-on-7 tournament in College Station.

Playing behind Gilbert has helped Brewer both on the field learning the quarterback position and off of it with the recruiting process. Like Gilbert, he isn't interested in the circus around the recruiting process and is only focused on bringing another state championship back to Lake Travis.

"We hang out a lot, and he helps me out a lot." Brewer said. "He teaches me a lot about film study. With him out with the shoulder injury he's able to watch me and I can learn from him."

While Michael will still have to wait one more year to be the starting quarterback at Lake Travis, he will play some defense and wide receiver, as well as taking some snaps backing up Gilbert this fall.

According to Brewer, when it comes to the recruiting process, Gilbert told him, "to not worry about it (and) just let it come to you. You'll know when it comes."

Brewer said his top three schools right now are Texas, Georgia, and Florida, and he has camped at Texas and Tulsa so far this summer.

On the thought of following Gilbert to Texas, Brewer seemed to be pretty warm to the idea.

"That would be great, obviously," Brewer, whose father quarterbacked the Longhorns in the early 1980's, said. "In high school playing behind him, he has taught me a lot. It would be great to go to Texas and do that too."
