New favorite for Chevoski Collins

Heading into the summer, 2013 prospect Chevoski Collins was a bit of an unknown to recruiting fans around the Lone Star State. That changed in a big way after the Livingston athlete turned heads at a couple different summer camps.

The 5-11, 185-pound Collins kicked his summer tour off with a stellar showing at a Texas Longhorn mini-camp. At that event, he was grouped up with a number of the Longhorns' 2012 commitments and Collins more than held his own. In fact, several onlookers described him as one of the top receivers at the event. Collins later camped at TCU and Texas A&M where he also performed very well.

"I think people were talking about me (at the Texas camp) because I was beating a lot of DBs off the line, getting open, running my routes well," Collins said. "I made a lot of catches and even on the difficult balls, I was catching them too."

Things have been pretty quiet of late on the recruiting front with Collins choosing to focus on Livingston's pre-season practices, but the playmaking receiver does have a few schools standing out. After listing TCU, Texas and Texas A&M as his top three, in order, in a previous report, Collins has changed things up a little in recent weeks.

"TCU and Texas are my top two. Then it would be OU and then A&M. I'm kind of looking at Texas over TCU right now," Collins said. "I just like their program. They always have a good program and it's just a good school to go to."

With recruiting on the back burner for the time being, Collins is working hard with his teammates for what he hopes will be a highly successful 2011 season. Collins has been playing at quarterback, wide receiver and free safety.

"I haven't been looking at recruiting so much. I'm just focused on my workouts, the team and how we're going to do this season," Collins said. "We're looking really good. We have our first scrimmage this weekend."

A versatile athlete who can line up on either side of the ball, Collins does have a preference of where he'd like to play in college. After his showing on offense at this summer's camps, his choice should come as no surprise.

"I think I could project really well at slot wide receiver," Collins said. "I just like playing wide receiver. I like being on the side of the ball and scoring.

"I'm working on getting faster. I run about a 4.5 right now. I'm doing a lot of footwork drills, running with a parachute, running up the big hill at our school, things like that.

Collins is planning to hit some college games in the fall but has yet to set up any visits. He lists academics and playing time as the two factors that will carry the most weight in his recruitment. Collins ranks No. 21 on the 2013 Lone Star Recruiting Top 100.
