New UT commit: Im a winner

One of the biggest questions surrounding the 2012 Texas hoops recruiting class was what was going to happen at the point guard position. Today the Horns got an answer, and they returned to a familiar city that produced one of the best point guards to ever put on a Texas uniform. Javan Felix of St. Augustine High School in New Orleans visited UT unofficially today, and he left as the second commitment in the Horns' 2012 recruiting class. Former Longhorn great D.J. Augustin also played in New Orleans before transferring to Sugar Land Hightower for his senior year.

For Felix, a 5-11, 180-pound guard, going to UT has been a dream for some time. In fact, ever since he stepped foot on the Texas campus as a youngster he's wanted to wear the burnt orange. Today, his dream school chose him.

"He chose me," said Felix of UT head basketball coach Rick Barnes. "He chose me out of a lot guards. He just felt like I was the best one. Texas has been a dream school since the ninth grade when I came to UT for an elite camp. That's always been a school I've had a good feeling about. The time came and they started recruiting me … it felt right."

When Texas' is at its best under Barnes, it's usually because of a dynamic playmaker at point guard that can create for teammates. In Felix, that's what the Horns got.

"That's pretty much my game," stated Texas' newest point guard commitment about creating for others on the hardwood. "I love to get my teammates open, and give them the ball when they're open. That's the big thing for me. It's like making sure everyone eats in the family before you. That's how I look at basketball. I feel like I can come in and contribute. I want to come in and win a title of coach Barnes. He's won a lot of games, but he deserves that."

Sometimes, it's the small things that stand out for recruits. A small gesture can go a long way in the recruitment of a player, and one thing during Texas' pursuit of Felix really stood out. And it wasn't until late in the summer that the Horns really turned up the heat, but this New Orleans product was won over in a hurry.

"Coach Barnes was truthful with me. That was important for me. It wasn't until this July," Felix stated about when things really started to pick up between him and Texas. "I just had a good feeling. He actually called my parents first to talk to them. My parents told me he called. That was important to me. That made me feel a certain way about it. Most coaches call a player first. He called my parents first and talked to them about how much they liked me and how well I was playing."

It doesn't sound like Texas fans have to worry about Felix being anything other than solid. It all happened so fast, but he's glad it's over.

"I get to go back to living my regular life," said Felix with a laugh. "Now all I have to do is keep working on the things I need to get better on."

Felix is known for his quickness, ability to handle the basketball, and his soft touch along with deep range. On the court this guard isn't fazed by pressure and traps as a point guard. He chose Texas over LSU, Oregon, Virginia, Baylor, Oklahoma State and others.

"I'm just looking forward to it," said Felix about playing at Texas. "[There will be] a lot of games being won … that's what I've been doing my whole life. I'm a winner."
