Several top prospects show well at 5-Star Academy

This weekend's Rivals.com Five-Star Academy hosted several standouts from the state of Texas, drawing top prospects from the 2010, 2011, and 2012 classes during the afternoon session.

With that said, the receiver group proved to be one of the deepest positions of the day.

Leading the way for all campers on the afternoon was Texas commitment Darius Terrell. The DeSoto product proved just what made him so desirable to college coaches.

Terrell ran crisp routes and showed tremendous ball skills throughout the course of one-on-ones and seven-on-seven drills. He took on all comers and at the end of the day took home the overall Camp MVP honors.

Terrell, however, was not the only big receiver to show well on the day. Austin Bowie receiver DeAndre Perry proved to be a mismatch whether he was lined up inside or outside. The Houston commitment used his body and long arms well to ward off defenders and high point the ball, and was rewarded with camp Offensive MVP honors.

Another big 2010 receiver also showed well on the day in Round Rock Stony Point's Gerard Shillow, and Austin High's Thomas Coffman may not be the biggest, but he caught everything and was able to get consistent separation.

In the 2011, class Cibolo Steele receiver Blake Gardner was one of the fiercest competitors on hand, and right up there with the best in the camp. He has been a standout throughout the spring and summer on the camp circuit and Friday in Austin continued to impress.

When you have a strong group of receivers you have to have someone get them the ball, and the quarterback group did not disappoint. Texas A&M commit Jameill Showers was among the best of the 2010 class. The Killeen Shooemaker prospect was consistent throwing short, medium, and long routes, and looked polished on the day.

North Mesquite signal caller Xavier Smith emerged on the scene Friday with a wide array of skills. He's a big quarterback with a strong arm and he is one to keep an eye on in the future. Silsbee, Texas signal caller Jeremy Johnson, who is committed to West Virginia, and 2011 Round Rock Stony Point's Aaryn Sharp also had strong performances on the day.

Speaking of the future, Marble Falls, Texas, 2012 quarterback Zed Woerner is one to keep an eye on. He can make all the throws and has the size college coaches love. He drew some rave reviews from the coaches on hand.

Defense not lacking

On the defensive side of the ball there were several talents on hand as well. 2011 Cedar Park Vista Ridge cornerback Jaylen Harris made a strong impression, taking home Defensive MVP honors. 2010 Texas commitment Adrian White was right up there with Harris at the top performers on the defensive side of the ball.

At safety, Round Rock Stony Point's Desmond Martin put forth a strong effort, and Jaylon Finner, 2011 Fort Bend Elkins safety, both had solid afternoons.

Round Rock Stony Point continued to show represent well at linebacker and on the defensive line. 2011 defensive tackle Jordan Wade may be soft spoken but his upside is there and he is a huge natural athlete. He has been on the baseball field all spring and summer and Friday at Round Rock ISD was his first camp. 2011 linebacker P.L. Lindley also had a nice day on the afternoon. He has a big frame, long arms, and footwork to go along with it. Stony Point 2010 defensive lineman John Andrews was named MVP of the O-line/D-line group.

Among the other standouts in the offensive and defensive line group were Pearland Dawson DT Aaron Davis, Rowlett DL Marcus Hawkins and Austin Westwood 2011 OL/DL Zach Crawford.

Notes

When it comes to camps, the impressions can be made before any football or testing is done. The eyeball test is good for an initial impression, and 2011 Aldine Eisenhower linebacker Jalante Jones was one of the first to catch the eye. DeAndre Washington, 2011 Fort Bend Marshall running back, also looked like he has bulked up nicely in the off-season as well.

West Orange-Stark athlete James Haynes worked at defensive back at the camp and was one of the most impressive during testing. 2010s Adrian Bennett of Klein Forest also put together a solid afternoon during testing.

Pflugerville Connally receiver Anthony Bryant also impressed during testing and 2011 Round Rock Stony Point athlete Stephen Williams was one of the most explosive athletes on the day.

A familiar name was in attendance Friday. 2012 Lake Travis receiver Griffin Gilbert, the younger brother of Texas Longhorn freshman Garrett Gilbert, had a strong performance. He's a long athlete and used his body well to go up and get the ball.

Round Rock Stony Point safety Desmond Martin reported a new offer from Texas Tech at the camp. Martin received the scholarship this week.

2013 DeSoto, Texas athlete Zach White, cousin of Texas commit Adrian White, was named the MVP of the morning Young Guns session. He worked out at cornerback during the camp.

Big Final Note

Overall the day was a huge success thanks in large part to Anthony Williams, Westwood head coach Anthony Wood, Round Rock head coach Lanny Wilson, and Kevin Killens.
