The Texas Longhorns experienced a tremendous amount of success recruiting the state of Arizona in the 2019 class, signing top national prospects Jake Smith and Brayden Liebrock. The UT staff has already been active in the 2020 class in recruiting some top targets in the state of Arizona, and those early efforts are paying off with an upcoming visit from a four-star defensive end.

“I’m going down there this weekend,” said Gilbert (AZ) Higley standout Jason Harris.

A Rivals250 member and the nation’s No. 109-ranked prospect overall, Harris picked up a Texas offer in early January.

“It felt great,” Harris said. “I guess they saw my film on Hudl. I met some of the coaches, the quarterback coach (Tim Beck). They seem cool. I feel wanted.”

Harris has never been to Austin, but said he’s heard good things and he’s anxious to get a look at the city and the Texas campus this weekend while in town with his parents.

“I’ve just heard a lot of great things about the campus, the coaches,” Harris said. “Some of the coaches had come to the school to see me. And they offered me, so I wanted to go take a visit down there.”

Texas’ recent recruiting efforts in Arizona haven’t gone unnoticed by Harris, and he said the idea of playing with others from his home state is something that appeals to him.

“That is something I’m aware of. I think it’s a good thing to come in, play with guys who are from the same state from me. That would be cool,” Harris said.

The 6-7, 220-pound Harris is also planning to visit Oklahoma in April. He said he’s wide open at this early stage of the process and hasn’t formulated a list of favorites. He plans to save his official visits for the fall.

“I haven’t taken any visit yet, so I’m just trying to get a feel for everything right now,” Harris said.

Harris’ combination of size and athleticism is obviously appealing, and he’s now holding more than 20 offers from the likes of Texas, Oklahoma, Alabama, Auburn, Cal, Florida, Nebraska, Oregon, Texas A&M, UCLA, USC and Utah, among others. Harris is also a standout on the basketball court but said he’s unsure if he’ll try to play both sports in college.

“I think being athletic and my speed are my strengths, using that to get off the ball,” Harris said. “I can still improve on my dropping in coverage. That can be better and that’s something I’ll work on at the next level.”
