Top WR Montrell Estell talks UT Junior Day, has UT in his early favorites

The Texas Longhorns made some coaching changes in the off-season, including to the program's offensive coordinator. The plan for the UT offense - and it was showcased in Monday's spring practice - is for the Longhorns to be up tempo and spread the ball around the field in the passing game.

The aggressive, fast-paced offense was the topic of conversation following Texas' first spring practice of the 2016 season, and it was an area of focus during a recent UT Junior Day as well.

Hooks wide receiver Montrell Estell, one of the top players in the state of Texas, attended Texas' Junior Day on February 27, and he liked what he heard about the Longhorns' new offense.

Key quote: "Their new offense stood out the most," Estell said. "It's going to be more spread out like Tulsa's offense. They're going to spread it out like that, throw it deep on the first chance they get."

Top four: Estell holds about 10 offers at this early stage of the recruiting process, including scholarships from schools like Arkansas, Notre Dame, Texas A&M, Texas Tech and SMU.

The Longhorns have yet to offer, but Texas still sits in Estell's top four, which consists of Notre Dame, Texas A&M, Texas and Arkansas.

Upcoming visit plans: Estell plans to take a visit to Arkansas for a spring practice in a couple weeks.

Texas invited him to come back for the Longhorns' Spring Game on April 16 and he's going to try attend that event as well.

More on the UT Junior Day: The 6-2, 177-pound Estell, out of Hooks, said he spent time at the Texas Junior Day talking to new wide receivers coach Charlie Williams and tight ends coach Jeff Traylor, who recruits East Texas for the Longhorns.

"It was nice. They were talking about how they're going to throw the ball deep a lot to the wide receivers so that was good," Estell said.

Not in a hurry: Estell said he'll take his time with the recruiting process and likely will not have a decision until close to National Signing Day next year.

Texas is in the mix, Estell said, because the Longhorns throw the ball a lot and he has family in Austin.

Well-rounded prospect: Though he's classified as a wide receiver, Estell excels on both sides of the ball for Hooks. Last year, as a junior, he earned district MVP after recording 28 receptions for 490 yards and 5 TDs while adding 33 carries for 412 yards and 4 TDs. On defense, he accounted for 69 tackles and 6 interceptions, three of which he took back for touchdowns.
