Wide receiver Garrett Wilson is one of the country’s top football prospects in the entire country for the 2019 class, so it’s no surprise that the Lake Travis standout has a long list of early scholarship offers. Wilson continues to evaluate every option that comes his way, but he doesn’t mind admitting that a recent offer from the University of Texas is one that has really grabbed his attention.
“That’s one that I’ve been waiting on, I’m not going to lie,” Wilson said. “Since I’ve started playing football, since moved down here, once they started recruiting me, that was big for me.”
Wilson lived in Columbus, OH before moving to Austin. Ohio State is another program that has offered, and both the Buckeyes and Longhorns are high on Wilson’s early list of favorites.
“Ohio State and Texas, they’re probably going toe to toe for me,” Wilson said. “Both are showing they really want me, so that means a lot too. Those are my two home towns, so that goes into as well.”
It’s very early in the process for Wilson, who ranks No. 112 in the 2019 recruiting class after seeing his stock soar in recent months. The 6-1, 175-pound playmaker could see his ranking continue to climb, and more schools are sure to enter the recruiting race as the months wear on. At this point, Wilson isn’t cutting anyone out, but he does have Texas and Ohio State ahead of the race at this stage.
“It’s all about finding the best fit right now. I have some schools that I like equally, now I have to find the one where I best fit in,” Wilson said. “Those ones (Texas and OSU) are at the top right now.”
Wilson said he has about six or seven other schools that have piqued his interest, including TCU, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Michigan. He’ll visit Oklahoma this weekend for a Sooners’ junior day and believes OU could be close to adding its name to his list of scholarship offers.
As for the hometown Longhorns, look for Wilson to make numerous visits to the Texas campus this spring.
“I think I’ll be on campus a lot, whenever I can,” Wilson said. “I have a lot of people who I’m really good friends with on the team, the 2018 class, so I’ll be up there a lot. Guys like Caden (Sterns), (Cameron) Dicker, D’Shawn (Jamison), Cade Brewer, even Sam Ehlinger.”
With the recruiting calendar having moved up due to the Early Signing Period, Wilson is looking to take his official visits this spring. He may then consider making a commitment in late summer or early fall.
With a Texas offer now in hand, the Longhorns figure to remain heavily in the mix down to the final wire, and the Texas staff is making Wilson a top priority.
“Coach (Drew) Mehringer and coach (Tim) Beck came by practice (on Monday). I pretty much talk to them every day,” Wilson said. “They tell me they think I can make a big difference for my home town, for my city. Things like that go into it, also building a relationship, just getting to talk and go from there.”
As a junior, Wilson turned in video game-like numbers, recording 98 receptions for 1,774 yards and 26 touchdowns. He added 122 yards and 3 scores on the ground and is also a terrific talent as a defensive back. Wilson thinks there’s still room to improve.
“I can improve on everything,” Wilson said. “Some of my strengths right now are my route running, going up and getting the ball. And run blocking. Being a wide receiver, I can still run block. Just being versatile. I feel like I can do a lot of things.”
