UT commit Tre Wisner talks visit plans, playing with Arch, RB recruiting

It feels like ages ago when running back Tre Wisner gave the Longhorns a verbal commitment back in late April. At the time, Wisner was the Longhorns’ fourth commitment in a recruiting class that has now grown to 18 pledges. Recently, the DeSoto playmaker took his official visit to Texas and Wisner said he already feels a high level of comfort in the UT program.

“It’s already home, but it’s good to get there and get the real experience of things,” Wisner said.

A Rivals250 member, Wisner actually committed on the night of the Longhorns’ spring football game. The timing of his pledge caught many by surprise but Wisner had been open in the spring about the strong relationship he had developed with Texas running backs coach Tashard Choice. Choice’s consistent recruiting efforts are a big reason Wisner decided to give the Longhorns an early commitment.

“He played a big role, a major role,” Wisner said. “Another thing they fall back on is being able to coach you on and off the field, hitting you up whenever it’s on his time, not just your time. That plays a big role in our connection and my commitment. He’s always hitting me up. That plays a big thing, not just relying on the kid to hit you up but you hitting (the player) up too.”

While he is happy with his commitment, Wisner said he may look to take one more official visit just to cover all his bases. He was scheduled to visit Florida State in June but had to reschedule that trip due to a 7-on-7 tournament he was playing in. He’s looking to make that trip happen, possibly in late July.

“I’ve had a relationship with coach (Chris) Thomsen. He’s been my guy there. And the other thing, they were my first offer, so I still have mad love for them,” Wisner said.

A 6-0, 180-pound speedster, Wisner played at Waco Connally during his sophomore and junior campaigns before transferring to DeSoto for his senior season. He’s one of the state’s most explosive players, having rushed for nearly 30 touchdowns in his two years at Connally.

As Wisner looks forward to his time at Texas, he’s excited about the chance to get to line up alongside recent quarterback commitment Arch Manning.

“Having someone with a great legacy in their family – really not just his family, with him too, he has a great background. Being able to play with a teammate like that, it just shows you how cool and how amazing and blessed people can be so yeah, it means a lot,” Wisner said.

Once Manning committed, Wisner turned his attention towards recruiting DeSoto teammate Johntay Cook. Now that Cook has added his name to the UT commitment list, Wisner’s focus is on another potential backfield mate.

“There’s one more back in my class, Cedric Baxter. We’re going to get him too,” Wisner said.
