UT hold the top spot for states top DT

The Eyes of Texas are on Cedar Hill, Texas defensive tackle Jarvis Humphrey.

With only a handful of scholarships remaining in its 2008 recruiting class, Humphrey has emerged as not only the top defensive tackle prospect on the Texas recruiting board this year, but he's the only known remaining interior line prospect that the coaching staff is currently coveting.

The 6-foot-2, 290-pound Humphrey, who is currently ranked as the state's No. 12 overall prospect in the Lone Star Recruiting rankings, reported last week that he had narrowed his list of schools down to Texas and Oklahoma State. However, Humphrey threw the recruiting world a curve ball this weekend when he took an unofficial visit to Texas A&M.

"It was nice," Humphrey said. "I really liked their fans. They are very loyal. The facilities were also really nice and the coaches were cool. It really was a good visit."

Even though the Aggies made a strong impression on the potential Rivals100 member, Humphrey said that the Longhorns and Cowboys remain the teams to beat. In fact, with Humphrey's spring break set to begin on Friday, there's a very good chance that his recruitment could be wrapped up in the next week.

"I think I'm going to be ready in about a week," Humphrey said. "I needed an extra week because I wanted to squeeze in a visit to Oklahoma State this weekend and maybe a visit to LSU if I can get down there."

While Humphrey is still trying to reach a decision, he admits that the Longhorns are the team to beat at the end of the day.

"Texas is pretty much my leader," Humphrey said. "Not everyone is keeping up with them, but a few schools are right there."

Humphrey added that the Longhorn coaching staff has stayed in contact with him in the last week to make sure that he knows they are keeping a seat warm for him in their 2008 recruiting haul.

"I talked to Bruce Chambers a couple of days ago and I was actually supposed to talk with coach Chambers today. He just wanted me to know that they like me and he wanted to know if there was anything else I needed to know about them."

When asked if he'd seen everything he needed to see about the Longhorns, Humphrey replied, "When I went out there I was really impressed with their entire program. They showed me what it's like at their practices and what it would be like if I went there. It felt like Cedar Hill to me. If I went there, all I'd have to do is change my colors."

That up-close attention to detail is exactly what Humphrey wants to see before he makes his decision.

"I want to be able to see how the team practices and what the position coach is like," Humphrey said. "I want to find a place that feels like home."
