Never a dull moment … that could be the recruiting motto for the Texas Longhorns under the current coaching staff.

One day after picking up a surprise commitment from Carthage running back Keaontay Ingram, the Longhorns were again plucking from the fertile recruiting grounds of East Texas on Wednesday evening, this time securing a verbal commitment from Arp standout DeMarvion Overshown.

A 6-4, 200-pounder who does a little bit of everything for Arp's defense, Texas is recruiting Overshown as safety. He joins do-everything DB Caden Sterns as the second defensive back commitment for the Longhorns.

“The first time I saw his highlights, the first thing that stood out was how long and big he was,” said Rivals.com regional recruiting analyst Nick Krueger. “Playing in the secondary as a safety, it almost looks like the ball naturally finds him because he’s so long and has such a big wingspan, but he has a nose for the ball and kind of throws himself around out there. Add that with what they’re picking up with Caden Sterns and it’s two guys who have good skills, natural instincts, two really good players overall.”

Overshown has been long-believed to be a Texas lean despite holding about 30 scholarship offers from top programs around the region and country. His pledge, combined with Sterns and a possible commitment from B.J. Foster, who will announce his decision on Monday, gives Texas an incredible start on its defensive back recruiting for the 2018 class. Add in the athleticism and versatility of some of the Horns’ other defensive commitments, including guys like linebacker Byron Hobbs and defensive end Ron Tatum, and Texas is setting itself up well for the future.

“Now you’re starting to build a class together with guys - look at Byron, Caden, these guys they’re bringing in, they’re guys that are long, explosive prospects that are really going to add some physicality in the way they hit, go after ball carriers,” Krueger said. “If you look at last year, there was some frustration with the pass and keeping down the big plays. In a couple years, this group of personnel is going to change the way games are called against Texas. You’re not going to be going over the top on them or spending much time in the pocket.”

A four-star prospect, Overshown becomes the Longhorns’ 10th overall commitment in the 2018 recruiting class. He ranks No. 26 on the Lone Star Recruiting Top 100.
